Communication Skills

is an applied English that emphasizes reading and writing.  It is designed to further the development of language skills and to stimulate greater interest in reading.  It emphasizes vocabulary development, reading and listening comprehension, the writing process and speaking skills.  Literature will also be included.

Prerequisites:  None (Students are placed according to 8th-Grade Placement Chart.)

Ninth-Grade Literature

is a college-prep course which integrates composition, grammar, and literature.  It covers the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading.  The development of vocabulary, speaking, listening, and researching skills will be included.

Ninth-Grade Literature / Composition (Honors)

An accelerated college preparatory course designed for the student who has a serious interest in the interpretation of literature.  It integrates writing, grammar and usage, speaking and listening.  It includes a variety of multicultural literature: short stories, novels, tales, poetry, mythology, drama and nonfiction, and emphasizes oral and written responses to literature, distinguishing characteristics of various genres and vocabulary study.  This course combines 9th and 10th grade on-level material.

Tenth-Grade Literature / Composition

is a college-preparation course which has a balance of literary genres, essay development, and grammar.  The development of vocabulary, speaking, listening, and research skills will be included.

Prerequisite:  1/2 Unit of English Credit

American Literature / Composition (Honors)

An accelerated college preparatory course designed for the student who has a serious interest in interpreting literature.  It covers a variety of literary genres and multicultural writers in a chronological or thematic pattern.  It emphasizes developing control in  expository writing (thesis support), moving toward precision in personal narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing and refining research skills.  It covers grammar, mechanics, and usage.

Prerequisite:  1 Unit of English Credit and Teacher Approval

American Humanities / Composition (Honors)

This course, primarily offered to gifted students, is a combined American Literature Honors Class (see above) and Honors U.S. History.  Students are assigned to Humanities for one period for the entire school year.  Students report to English during one-half of the class period and report to U.S. History during the other half of the period.  At the end of the year, students receive 1 unit of credit in American Literature and 1 Unit of credit in U.S. History.

American Literature Composition

is a college preparatory class which surveys American works and authors and will provide writing experiences related tot he interpretation of literature.  Grammar, vocabulary development, listening, speaking, and research will also be included.

Prerequisites:  1 & 1/2 Units of English Credit

American Literature / Composition Application

will survey major American works and authors and provide writing experiences related to literature and work place settings.  Grammar, vocabulary, listening, and speaking skills will be integral parts of this course.

Prerequisites:  1 & 1/2 Units of English Credit

English Literature / Composition (Honors)

is an accelerated college-prep course designed for the student who has a serious interest in interpreting literature.  It offers opportunities to improve reading, writing, speaking/listening, and critical thinking skills through the study of literary selections from British writers organized chronologically or thematically.  It emphasizes developing control in expository writing (thesis support), moving toward precision in personal narrative, descriptive and persuasive writing and refining research skills.  It covers grammar, mechanics, and usage.

Prerequisite:  2 & 1/2 Units of English Credit and Teacher Recommendation

World Literature and Composition

a college preparatory course surveying the works of the early literature of the world through the present day.  Skills in literary analysis and critical thinking are stressed.  Literary terms, vocabulary study, composition techniques, and parallel readings will be incorporated. 

Prerequisite: 3 units English Credit (including 1 Unit of American Literature)

Pacesetter English

 

 

Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition

A college-level course that focuses on the reading and analysis of literary works and writing of critical essays.  The course conforms to the College Board recommendations for the Advanced Placement Literary and Composition Examination.  It covers the study and practice of writing and the study of literary, stresses modes of discourse, assumptions underlying rhetorical strategies, connotation, metaphor, irony, syntax, and tone.  The course emphasizes writing critical analyses of literature and includes essays in exposition and argument, poetry, drama, prose fiction, and expository literature. 

Prerequisite: 1 Unit 9th Lit, 1 Unit American Lit/Comp, 1 Unit English Lit/Comp and Teacher Recommendation.

Advanced Placement English Language and Composition

is a college level course that focuses on critical thinking, reading and writing through the study and discussion of expository, analytical and argumentative essays.  It emphasizes the connection between reading and writing mature NONFICTION prose.

Prerequisite:  1 Unit 9th Lit, 1 Unit American Lit/Comp, 1 Unit English Lit/Comp and Teacher Recommendation.
